 Beaches

On weekends and holidays the beaches are packed, but on other days you can might have it all to yourself!

The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Huarmey is beaches. Just 10 minutes (by car) North of Huarmey is Tuquillo, considered by some to have the beach most beautiful in the pacific. Tuquillo has the Circuit of beaches, a collection of beaches connected by an easy walk, each beach uniquely different from the others. In Antivito you can Surf and bodyboard, testament to this is the competitions held here for these events. Maracaná is for relaxing and swimming. Pocita has a sheltered, but natural, pool, especially good for children. And Erizo is suited to Snorkelling and scuba.

Outdoor Adventure

Bodyboarding at Huarmey, Peru

Surfing and Bodyboarding are top sports around Huarmey, but you can also enjoy mountain biking, Horse Riding, Trekking (coastal walks, and inland), Sandboarding, and 4 x 4 adventures.

The Town (Huarmey)

Huarmey is known as the ¨Cuidad de la Cordialidad” directly translated, this means the city of the cordiality (warmth, friendliness, geniality, heartiness), and that´s really how it is. The people are friendly. Children grasp the opportunity to talk to the visitors. And you will experience  this friendliness in the streets from the moment you arrive.

Culebras

The Wharf and Boats in the Port of Culebras

About 15 minutes North of Huarmey is the port town of Culebras. Culebras is a tiny town of just 2,900 inhabitants, but it´s tipped to be a major tourist destination in the future, for it´s access to beautiful beaches. At the moment it´s an active port where you can witness the fish being brought in and watch the women deftly process the fish, removing the bones and guts in swift skilled movements of the hands .

In Culebras you can also hire a boat (with Captain) to take you on a tour of the bays and islands. In such a tour you should expect to see numerous birds, including condors and Humboldt Penguins, and sea lions.

The deft hand work of boning and gutting the fish.

Fishing

Fish from the shore, the rocky crags, or get one of the boats in Culebras to take you out. Waiting out there are about 700 different types of fish! King Fish and Calamari are amongst the most common seafood caught here.

Huarmey Valley and Culebras Valley (Valle de Huarmey y Valle de Culebras)

Huarmey Valley and Culebras Valley are the Fruit and vegetable baskets of the region, and can easily be explored by car, foot , bike or horseback. The valleys are like oasises amongst the dry spectacular dunes of the area. In an area of little rainfall the crops are irrigated from the snow fed rivers.  Major crops are Corn, Asparagus, Paprika, Watermelons and Frijoles. And you will also discover mango, banana, soursop, papaya, peaches, and grapes.

Walks in Huarmey Valley lead to interesting finds.

Archaeology

Huarmey is a great place to discover some of Peru´s lesser known archaeological sites. It is the site of a pre-Columbian Chimu human sacrifice and mass burial site from the 14th century.  See http://www.bienvenidaperu.com/English/Ediciones/Edicion40/descubrimiento/Body.htm for an interesting account of this site, Punta Lobos.

Information about Six archaeological sites in the Huarmey region is provided on the website  http://www.huarmey.com/arquelogiahuarmey.htm .

Culinary Delights

Foodies will not be disappointed in Huarmey’s gastronimical delights. A brilliant selection of seafood and fresh tropical produce provide for some fantastic meals. The best known dish is ‘Picante de Cuy’ (Spiced Guinea Pig), known for it’s exquisite flavor and fantastic presentation.  ‘Ceviche de Pescado‘ (Fish marinated in lemon), is another famed dish of the region, as is ‘Ceviche de Pato’.

The region is also known for its ‘Licor de Chicha’ and there is a Wine growing region just North of Culebras.
